How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
