How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different connector pins, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine click here when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is check here 0.

3. Fuel Pump
